Air Beneath the Wings

Description

A double breasted cormorant airs out its wings in the early morning August sun, giving its black wings a slightly magenta hue. But it knows it's not alone because it sneaks a peak over its wing to see what, or who, is watching its morning ritual. And its striking green eyes make it obvious it's looking at the photographer. Double breasted cormorants can have a wingspan of up to 4 ft. Because these birds' feathers are not waterproof and produce less preening oil, they must take time out of their days to dry out their wings.
